# The Parts of a Remodel That Don't Make the Instagram Post
A finished remodel makes for a great photo.
A spacious kitchen. A luxurious bathroom. A beautiful three-season room overlooking your backyard. The details that make you stop scrolling and imagine what it would be like to have those spaces in your own home.
What you don’t see is everything that led up to those spaces.
You don't see the hours spent understanding an existing home, coordinating the work, solving existing issues, or making sure what happens behind the walls supports what you'll eventually see in front of them.
Unlike new construction, remodeling doesn't begin with design. We're updating a feature or room in a home that may have been built decades ago. That means understanding what's already there before determining how the new spaces will work within.
While those parts may never make it into the Instagram post, they determine the quality of your project.
A Successful Remodel Starts Before Demolition
There's a great deal of work that needs to be completed before any demolition occurs.
We need to understand how the house is constructed, how the new work will connect to the existing home, and which design concept works best.
Then comes coordination of product, fit, and finish.
Cabinet dimensions can affect countertops. Framing can affect plumbing and electrical layout. A simple decision made early in the project can have significant consequences several steps later.
That's why so much of a successful remodeling project is determined well before construction begins.
Demolition Isn't Just Tearing Things Out
Once demolition begins, an existing house starts revealing more of its story.
We may uncover old wiring, unexpected plumbing, or framing that doesn't meet current codes.
Not every discovery is a serious problem. Often, it's simply a condition you need to understand before moving forward.
The important question isn't whether an older home will contain surprises. It's whether the team of professionals managing your project understands the best way to handle them.
On one project, demolition revealed moisture and water damage that had led to mold growth in an area that wasn't visible before the walls were opened up. The issue was brought to the homeowners' attention right away, along with photos and the recommended steps and costs to correct it. Catching the issue early allowed the team to address it before moving forward on the project.
What We Cover Up Matters
Some of the most important work on a remodeling project eventually gets covered with drywall.
Electrical. Plumbing. Insulation. Framing. Structural work.
Very few people walk into a finished bathroom and compliment the waterproofing behind the tile or even notice it's there. But everyone will if floors become flooded, showers leak, or walls become spongy from a leaking pipe in the wall.
Craftsmanship isn't limited to what you can see. Often, the work you can't see determines how well the finished space will perform years from now.
Remodeling Is An Orchestration
A typical remodeling project can involve many moving parts. Depending on the project, there may be between 10 and 20 players involved, from trade contractors to suppliers and carpenters. Ensuring a successful project and an enjoyable experience requires mastery of project coordination skills that keep all professionals working in harmony.
When that sequence is managed well, homeowners may never fully grasp it simply by seeing the final product. But they'll appreciate it in the time it takes to complete the project and in the experience they have throughout.
And that's the point.
A good remodeling process should allow the homeowner to sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience.
When The Unexpected Happens
When something unexpected is discovered, the job is to understand it, determine the right solution, communicate it clearly to the homeowner, and coordinate any necessary changes.
Problem-solving isn't an exception to remodeling. It's part of remodeling.
For example, a wall may appear to be a straightforward part of the original plan to remove. But once the wall is opened up, what's behind it can change the plan. On one of our projects, a wall that was expected to be non-load-bearing was opened up as part of the remodel. Once the framing was exposed, it became clear that the wall was carrying some of the home's weight. The original plan had to be reworked to account for the structure before the project continued.
The Details Still Matter
As construction moves toward finishes, smaller differences become much more noticeable.
A wall that's slightly out of plumb may not seem significant until cabinetry meets it. A floor that's out of level becomes obvious once you install an island. Trim needs to meet existing surfaces that may have shifted considerably since the house was built.
This is where experienced craftspeople earn their keep.
The objective isn't simply to install each piece. It's to make everything come together as though it was always meant to be there.
Your House Is Still Your Home
Another part of the remodeling process that rarely gets photographed: homeowners living only a few feet from the project.
Not everyone has a second home to move into for 3-4 months. They need to continue living in their homes while the project is completed. For the contractor, that means protecting the parts of the house that aren't under construction, controlling dust and debris, and communicating every step of the way.
We're not simply working on construction project; we're working inside someone's home.
Respecting that home and the people living in it is also a big responsibility throughout the project.
Then Comes The Part Everyone Sees
Eventually, the tools disappear. The home is cleaned. The final details are completed.
And what once looked like a construction project is now your new home.
When everything has been done well, your new space should feel as though it was always meant to be there.
The Finished Project Is Only Part Of The Story
We love a beautiful "after" photo as much as anyone.
But after more than five decades of remodeling homes, we've learned that the finished result depends on hundreds of decisions made long before anyone picks up a camera.
It's the question someone thought to ask. The problem someone caught before it became bigger. The details a craftsperson took extra time to get right.
Most of those moments will never make Instagram.
But they're a big part of creating a remodel that's thoughtfully planned, carefully built, and enjoyable to live in for years to come.
